Re-Declaration Ceremony

  • Pennsylvania State Capitol Rotunda 501 North 3rd Street Harrisburg, PA, 17101 United States (map)

At 2 PM Wednesday, October 29, a group of Central Pennsylvania citizens will gather in the rotunda of the Pennsylvania Capitol for a ceremonial reading of the Declaration of Independence. As the 250 th anniversary of the founding of our country approaches, celebrations of this momentous event are planned across the nation with the Declaration of Independence as the centerpiece. This historic document articulates the philosophical, factual, and legal bases for the founding of our nation, setting forth the principles of individual rights including "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness" and the right of the people to resist agovernment that violates these principles – concepts and history relevant to our country today. We need volunteers to read individual paragraphs from the Declaration, and we will provide index cards with quotations. To allow this to happen in an orderly way, please let us know if you will attend, and if you are willing to read out loud a paragraph from our founding document. We have a permit issued by the state for this gathering.
